Equip the chisel, pruner or trowel, then interact with the resource. You do not need to hold these tools or select them from a wheel. Frozen Way’s PC example is pressing E on ore with the chisel equipped.
Use a gathering tool
- Equip the required tool in your inventory.
- Approach the resource you want to gather. For the chisel, the developer’s example is ore; the pruner and trowel apply to different plant materials.
- Use the interaction prompt shown on screen. Press E if that is the key your PC build displays.
- Check whether the resource was collected. If not, use the checks below.
Frozen Way’s gathering explanation ↗ confirms automatic use of equipped tools. The steps above organize that explanation into an interaction checklist.
Equipped does not mean held
For these three gathering tools, equipment enables the resource interaction. A community reply also describes small equipped-tool icons above the hotbar; that visual cue is a player report, not a separately verified layout for every version.
The scanner and Builder are a different problem. If you cannot assign one of those to a shortcut, check hotbar and middle-mouse help.
Equipped, but gathering still fails
- No prompt: check the target and equipped tool. A tool does not apply to every plant or rock.
- A prompt appears but nothing is collected: record the resource name, tool and exact action before trying another compatible target.
- Nothing can be gathered: report it. Frozen Way explicitly asks players to report cases where equipped tools still cannot collect anything.
Include whether you are using the demo or full game, the version, input device and a screenshot of the prompt. See the bug-report checklist.
Which tool does each plant need?
The developer confirms that the pruner and trowel work on different plant materials, but does not supply a species-by-tool table in this reply. Use the target’s prompt. The plant reference covers documented habitats and uses, not an unverified tool assignment.
