Quick answer

If your problem is grafting a larger plant, start with the pruner and branch interaction rather than assuming that you need another lab machine. For other experiments, check the objective, required device and inputs shown in your game. Historical device descriptions below may differ from the release build.

What should I set up first?

Start with the device required by your current research objective. The August 2026 publisher overview confirms laboratory devices for collected samples and plant cultivation for decoration or harvests; it does not establish one universal equipment order.

  1. Read the objective and the selected device or blueprint.
  2. List the required inputs and amounts. If the device is unavailable, check the requirement displayed before collecting unrelated materials.
  3. Find the named species using plant habitats or creature habitats.
  4. Return to the same device and check its requirements again before committing inputs.

Growing plants and running experiments

The January 23, 2023 technology devlog describes a Vertical Farm for growing plants in laboratory conditions. The current publisher overview confirms cultivation, but does not verify the present device name, costs or controls.

Cultivation and hybrid creation are different goals. If you want an ordinary harvest, read the plant’s current growth requirements. If you want a hybrid, check the experiment method and compatibility information too.

An experiment will not start or produces no change

Larger plant will not crossbreed: use the current grafting answer. The player in that thread was looking for lab preparation, but the developer-marked response instead explains collecting and placing branches. This does not establish a universal method for every specimen.

Record the visible state before trying again. The following checks use historical development information as clues, not a confirmed current error guide:

  • Flowering plant: the 2022 lab devlog required an actively blooming specimen for allogamy. Check the growth state shown in your game.
  • Grafted tree with unchanged fruit: that devlog described incompatible branches as producing unchanged fruit. Record the tree and branch rather than assuming the attempt succeeded.
  • Fungus with no mutation: it described chamber settings and environmental samples as relevant. Read the current chamber requirements; no numerical settings are supplied here.

Compare the three historical experiment methods.

Keep a useful experiment record

  • Game version, objective and device name.
  • Method, input species, quantities and growth state.
  • Conditions displayed by the device, including any warning.
  • Observed result: no start, unchanged output or a changed trait.

Change one input or condition at a time when comparing attempts. There is no verified recipe list here; check the evidence behind hybrid mechanics before treating a suggested pair as compatible.
